How to become a remapper
So your thinking about tuning/remapping vehicles yourself but don’t know where to start.
Here we will breakdown how to become a self employed tuner or how to add tuning services to your business.
To become a Tuner you need three things – Diagnostic Tool, Tuning Tool and a File Service Provider
Diagnostic Tools
You will need a diagnostic tool before doing any work on a vehicle.
If your doing any DPF, EGR, AdBlue fault solutions; you will need to get the fault codes for the file provider.
You need the confidence and knowledge that the car has a good bill of health before doing any work, or has fault codes present for you to properly find a fault solution.
If a car is showing any engine codes there is a chance that a stage-1 remap could push those faulty components and speed up the deterioration.
A diagnostic tool can also be added to your services if not already.
You will need a Diagnostic tool for any work involving fault code solutions. This type of work is typical with DPF, EGR, Swirl Flaps, AdBlue etc.
You will need the fault codes to send over to the file technician so they can make a software solution for the fault.
We must state, these software solutions are for off road use only.

Tuning Tools
Each tuning tool has it’s merits and features.
We provide tuning tools perfect for beginners to seasoned remappers.
Tuning tools aren’t a one size fits all, you may learn that you prefer to use one over another.
The main component you need, is a tuning tool that can read and write files onto a vehicles ECU via OBD, Bench mode and Boot mode.
Why do you need a tuning tool that does OBD, Bench and Boot mode?
OBD is a straight “Plug-in and Play” way to tune a vehicle, it’s the fastest and least complicated way to tune.
Not all vehicles can be tuned via OBD.
Vehicles that can’t be tuned via OBD will need to be either Benched or Booted. This requires the tuner to physically remove the ECU from the vehicle and “pin” the ECU directly to the tuning tool.
This may sound complicated, but after you’ve Benched/Booted your first ECU, you will find the hardest part is finding the ECU in the engine bay (we have videos and guides on ECU locations, so this also isn’t that difficult).
Our recomendation
Autotuner is a good starting point for a tuning tool, it has a user friendly interface and all the hardware you need to get started.
It does OBD, Bench and Boot modes. The Bench & Boot modes have clear and easy diagrams and instructions to follow.
It doesn’t require any subscriptions, comes with a hardcase and is easy to store.
